Accounting for business combinations

The research group aims to investigate accounting and disclosure issues that arise in business combinations. In detail, the group studies criteria to define consolidation area, determinants and consequences of the price allocation in business combinations, also focusing on the effects of internal monitoring on the quality of financial reporting within a specific empirical area (representation of business combination transactions). Regarding the consequences of accounting for business combinations, the group aims to verify whether goodwill and related impairment losses are perceived as value relevant by the financial market. Impairment test is also a topic of research, with the purpose to verify the performance achieved in the aftermath of business combinations, and to ascertain its use as an earnings management tool. Further areas of investigation concern determinants of quality in mandatory and voluntary disclosure provided in cases of business combinations, with a focus on the role of both purchasing entity and acquired entity. The research group mainly develops quantitative empirical analyses focused on national, European and non-European contexts, as well as referred to both manufacturing industry and banking industry.
