Research groups

The international research group includes members from the University of Verona, Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna, Kedge Business School, and Lund University. The relationship between digital transformation (DT) and sustainability has become a central issue for various societal actors, such as governments, economic institutions, and consulting firms. Recent literature has highlighted the positive effects of DT on the three main dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental, and social, suggesting that DT can have a favorable impact on these areas. However, it is essential also to consider the negative aspects of DT and digital technologies in relation to sustainability outcomes. Each dimension of sustainability presents both opportunities and challenges. In the economic sphere, digitalization increases productivity and entrepreneurship but may also lead to job displacement, especially in sectors reliant on manual labor. In terms of the environmental dimension, developing digital infrastructure has environmental costs, which need to be balanced against potential benefits in resource consumption reduction. On the social level, DT democratizes access to information and educational resources but can also exacerbate existing inequalities through the digital divide. The research group aims to explore these complex dynamics by analyzing the positive and negative effects of digital transformation to promote a positive balance between benefits and drawbacks across the different sustainability dimensions.
